tired ankles..
Wednesday, February 18, 2009 11:20 PM

i haven't blogged in a long time ever since the start of attachment. everyday, i return home with aching ankles, so much so that it almost feels like a sprain. after resting, the ache will be gone and the next working day will aggravate it again. it's almost like a cycle. these two weeks have been great though it's tiring, i've had the opportunity to observe so many procedures.. some had been very exciting while others were more of heart-wrenching cases.

last week marks the end of my obstetrics attachment. i was down at the delivery suite and with a little help of luck, i managed to observe 2 deliveries. the second one was more exciting - this malay 26 yo lady was on epidural; she couldn't feel much of the contractions and therefore she can't push, and we had to keep encouraging her while the nurse lowered e dosage. everytime we saw the baby's head, she let go of her breath while pushing and the baby slipped right back in again. the doc then "cut" her vagina a little more to facilitate the delivery and there, baby boy was out! i think the father's face went a bit pale cos the wife lost a lot of blood.. :P

today, i observed abortion procedures (mid trimester pregnancy termination MTPT for short) and it was really heart wrenching. the baby had to be aborted due to triple X syndrome, a sort of chromosomal abnormalities. MTPT is not abortion using vacuum suction apparatus. instead, the doc inserts a few doses of abortion inducing dosages into the patient's vagina and awaits spontaneous abortion. the patient was instructed to alert staff nurse IMMED if she feels smth coming out. in the end, baby was out, quite well formed and it was shown to the mom as well as the husband. think the husband teared.. sad.

a lot of things happened today too. this patient that i was nursing was complaining of breathlessness in the morning. afterwhich, her condition quickly deteriorated and she became cold and clammy. i quickly alerted staff nurse and she had to call the doctor down, and all of a sudden, the e-trolley is there and i guess they were doing resuscitation. after that, she was sent to OT. i'm not really sure if she's ok now, but i do pray for her. this ah-ma is very nice plus the fact that i've been nursing her for sometime now makes me even sadder. haiz, such is life..

anyway, i got to administer a few injections during the course of my attachment there too! i'm so glad and happy that everything is ok. =) managed to make myself useful in the ward, i'm pleased. i hope to get to do more though.

here's some overdue pics:
