today, one of my patient passed away. she was admitted a few days ago for descending colon cancer; diagnosis read that she refused treatment and she was on DNR status which meant 'Do not resuscitate', all signed and agreed by her family members. it was clearly her wish to go..

i still remember the day when she was admitted. i helped her to the toilet numerous times when she complained that she wanted to pee; but no pee came out. they then put her on urinary catheter; she kept asking if it was ok to pee and if the bed will be wet. i had a hard time trying to explain to her tt it was ok to pee; because all the urine will go to the tube which will then go to a urine bag, in hokkien.

i still remember how she said 'thank you thank you' numerous times to me, for helping her. her condition quickly worsened; and yesterday, she was lying on the bed, all feeble. her daughter came up to us and told us she complained of grave abdominal pain; nurse gave her an injection; while i told her in hokkien tt we're gg to give her an injection now; and told her to relax..

today, she passed away at 12.30pm, just when i was taking dwn report for the ward. at first, i didn't know tt she had passed away until i saw her family members standing outside the cubicle and crying. the worst had happened. her SPO2 level dropped to 50, and she was gone, puff, just like that. her mouth was open, and her skin was very yellowish. her body was beginning to get very stiff. i didn't had the chance to do the last office (cleaning & wrapping of bodies) as only 1 student was allowed to go in.

death. it's part and parcel of life. life.. *puff* gone just like that. :(

on a sidenote, mdm phua - another patient, gave me half a bunch of bananas! she will be transferred to AMK community hospital soon. she asked if i will be working on the weekends; i told her no. she said tt she will come to visit me during my shift if possible. i told her tt i'll miss her badly if she's really gg to be transf during the wkends & if i don't see her on mon. aww.

she's such a nice & cute patient. i brought her to the day room to watch the 430pm taiwan show on chn 8 today. she used such a motherly tone to ask me to be careful when i climbed onto a chair in order to switch on the tv/adjust vol for her. the other day, she kept making cute faces at me while i was listening to the handover report by the nurses; such a cutie pie isn't it? :)
